It’s like taking an intensive master’s course in the art and craft of wig making and wig dressing, all in one book.
The book takes you on a whistle stop tour of the history of wigs and wig making and is crammed full of delicious details. Spanning more than 5,000 years in one chapter, it covers everything from the wig wearing rituals of the Egyptians to the backcombed bouffant of the 1960’s.
Followed by detailed descriptions of professional wig making tools, guides and templates for everything from creating wig foundations to how to begin knotting; to creating your own lace front wigs and facial hair pieces for use in film, theatre and television.
There’s also a great deal here for talented drag queens who want to learn how to design and style their own spectacular wigs.

Tools and techniques are explained and discussed in detail along with step-by-step guides to mastering the historic crafts such as how to use ‘weaving sticks’ to create your own hair wefts; guides to mastering the ‘winding machine’ to create your own ‘switches’ and the art of creating circular clusters and hair pieces. Along with an insider’s guide of where to source professional specialist supplies to get you started.

Detailed step-by-step guides teach you not only how to make wigs but also how to set them for historical looks

Detailed step-by-step guides teach you not only how to make wigs but also how to set them for historical looks

I especially love the step-by-step period styling guides for different historical eras. I only wish there were MORE. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that Melanie is planning a second volume on wig dressing techniques for ALL the historical eras!
Although there are a couple of other great titles available about wig making, most are written from an American perspective. Unfortunately, this can be confusing for the British makeup artist, as some of the technical terms and language of wig making differ in the US.
So I believe that Melanie has created the definitive British ‘bible’ of wig making and wig dressing. A graduate of the London School of Fashion, she has worked at the Royal Opera House since 2000 and as the Wigs and Makeup Coordinator since 2007. Melanie also won the award for Outstanding Achievement in 2016 at the Technical Theatre Awards.

The book is a work of passion and a collaboration with some of Melanie’s most talented colleagues. There is a rich heritage of wig making at the Royal Opera House and a wealth of expertise.
Melanie has included work by team members such as Linda Cooley who also owns the famous Shepperton Wigs Company and Gill Little who originally trained at the legendary Wig Creations.

The once world-famous Wig Creations of London hand crafted and designed all the wigs for the great musicals such as my Fair Lady and big budget epics like Cleopatra; as well as making wigs for film icons such Elizabeth Taylor, Vivien Leigh, Katherine Hepburn and Sophia Loren.
Such is the quality and pedigree of the experience, expertise and heritage of British wig making tradition that is now available to you in A Practical Guide to Wig Making and Wig Dressing.
